Axy care while cycling

hes in a chinese take out dish with enough to just float off the bottom- shoudl i lower it so it only just covers him?

this board is absolutely fantastic by the way... thankyou very much everyone for your help.

yes if you lower it so his feet can touch the bottom, but still cover his top fin, then he may not float so much.

your water twister cooler thing is a good one and some people on here were going to make one but we never heard back about it

lower it so his toe tips can touch the bottom of the container

why is floating bad for him? (water lowered now)He seems to be a bit more alert than when i first moved him. What would be signs of health (or illness as the case may be)?

the water twister idea sounds like a great idea!. i might even try it myself!!.

It's the fact that you mentioned floating on the side, which can be stressful for him. At least it will give him a chance to calm down, if he is stressed from trying to right himself.

yes, the ones you mentioned above are the ones you need. sorry about your loss

its pretty upsetting, but im doing my best to save the other one. He does seem to be improving a bit. It appears that our tank water is very high in ammonia since the really big rains we had. perhaps there was alot of bird poop etc on the roof? (yuck). I have swapped to bottled water for now and have started cycling the big tank. Its going to be much too expensive to use bottled water for all changes... how can i clean up my tank water?
my poor fridge axy is in a bad way... his gills are just bare branches.

it is upsetting isnt it? i have a pleco on deaths door but i think she is making a recovery now, i cried myself to sleep a few times because i felt i was going to have to put her down but anyway.... im not sure what to do about your ammonia probs, i do know that most bottled water has been distilled/purifed/something like that and it takes out minerals/other things needed in water with animals? best to wait for more clarification on that one though.

just fill that tank up with tank water, if nothing else the high ammonia will start the cycle off, just dont put your axie in there at all! dont give up on your axie, they do have rudimentary lungs that they can use if they really need to!

keep enough water to do full water changes in a container in the fridge... but seeing as your tank water is high in ammonia id just chill that bottled water.

He's dead this morning so now i just have to worry about cycling the tank. Its been two days and is still very cloudy with tank water. I have ordered a master test kit and a bunch of other stuff. We have large stones in there but my husband has decided he prefers sand. Not sure how to solve that one, but we will see how we go. Can i get sand in there without having to empty the tank?

OH NO!! sorry to hear about your loss! cloudy water may be a bacteria bloom or an ammonia spike, the tank could smell like eggs if it is an ammonia spike.

an easy way to change substrates over is to get a net and net all the stones out (minus any animals of course!!), thats what i did when i was changing my sands over and it worked fine, i didnt have to empty out any of the water.

does the sand all sink or do you end up with a big cloudy mess? does it get cloudy if the axy stirs it up?

You end up with a big cloudy mess in the beginning, but it sinks eventually. My sand settled over night.
Ive seen a couple of posts on here about stired up sand when their axie makes for a mad dash, but my sand doesnt do that (? wierd ? Im assuming it depends on which sand you chose to use).

Make sure, no matter what sand you get, to wash it really well!! You could end up filling up the whole tank with sand, and then finding not only FILTHY water but also a film of all kinds of nasties on the surface.
Good luck.

There are many posts scatted throughout that have tips/advise regarding sand.
You might find these useful. You wont even need to do a search really... just scroll down and read through some of the threads in this topic ("tank setups, filters... etc).

ok i just changed to sand and i have to rinse it like 15 times b/c the first night its was cloudy so i let it sit for 24 hours but no difference so i cleaned it 10 more times and now its as clear as day so what you do is pour the sand in a bucket fill with water stir it up let a little of the cloud settle and then dump the water out with out dumping the sand and then repeat until you can see the water clearing up for one or two minutes after you stir it up
