As the thread title says basically, Im trying to figure it out!

I know axolotls have very poor eyesight but as far as I know they are not completely blind. I know their speciality is detecting moving wriggling things but My axie seems to respond to visual things that dont move (like placing an object in at the opposite end of the tank, he'll just come straight over to have a look) like im guessing alot of yours would. he also does it if I place an object next to the tank he'll come over and stare at it for a while to check it out, also responds to me going up to the tank coming up to the front to say hello and following me from side to side as if he can see me as clear as day!

Even if their eyesight is very poor they obviously have some kind of reasonable visual ability for them to do the things they appear to do,

So why are these axolotl beasties always bumping into everything in the tank, its like Gomez goes out of his way to bump into something is it bump first then if its in his way bump again?!?! I just dont get it? Im sure gomez isnt unique on this one and most if not all axies are like this just bumping and barging their way through everything!

Are they really that stupid, are they really that blind? Or do they just not give a toss and just not look where they are going?

...... He can catch a lightning quick zebra danio and stalks shrimp but bumps straight into a 12in lump of bogwood as if he doesnt know its there?!?!

If I have made this up and its only Gomez that is blind/stupid/Both then that means I have a very silly axoltol coz I know he's not blind so why bump into everything? AHHHH!

Judging from all the strange things ive seen Gomez do I'd go with stupid, but then theres the question how can they be that stupid? as they are not stupid animals, (my fish dont bump into everything and im sure hes more intelligent than one of my guppies!)! Ahh Silly Axolotls!

I think they're geniuses of slapstick and they know exactly what their doing!

I can always imagine mine wearing a silly hat, glasses and holding a cigar while saying something like "I may look like an idiot and talk like an idiot but don't let that fool you. I really am an idiot"

Ha I think you could be bang on there! And I think abit of photoshopping is in order an axie in a hat just like you said! I'll get on the case, it might make this whole thing alot easier to understand, watch this space........

Ooo I feel a photo competition coming on.

lol - Seemingly, they may appear stupid...on the other hand, don't they have US exactly where they want us?

My axie Alonzo lines himself up towards the other side of the tank every morning, gets ready and swims off really fast into the other side. It's the funniest thing I have ever seen and they seem to enjoy the bumping of noses... :)

Yep, I think they just have a very different kind of intelligence. They're quirky little animals. And they don't mind bumping into things. I've noticed mine also like to sleep in odd positions, balancing on a left front foot and right back foot, or vice versa.

All of my guys bump into stuff and each other. Especially the little ones! My two adults love teasing my cats to no end. They will go from one end of the tank to the other just following the cats. They definately know the difference between us and my furry friends. They always break out one of their "Feed Me" poses when it's one of us! They won't even go after fingers anymore. They just look at us like I know that's not a worm and I'm not gonna bother! Not the brightest but not the dumbest! :D

My axies sometimes have (what I call) an Axie Outburst and bump into each other and everything. (And that's not when I turn on the light. They never freaked out of that yet...)

They're just fun to watch. They might act stupid and silly but I think they're pretty smart on their own axolotlish way.

Ed your post has made me laugh:D I think axies are great to watch but my 3 dont seem to bump around there tank at all so maybe mine are the exceptions? Mojo and Jabba are vey graceful in what they do even when they go up for air they float gently down but then theres Finley, he is the smallest but the clumsiest I thought he was blind when I got him as he goes up for air and nose dives down at a rate of knots am gob smacked he does not have a squashed nose, silly axie!

Reading this thread just made me want an axie even more. I can't wait to start setting up my aquarium. Still need to do some more researching and I also need to find a proper aquarium store nearby xD But that's a small sacrifice for the hours of entertainment that they'll give me :D
