Help! We just got my daughter an axolotl but he won't come out of his hiding spot. He'll stick his head out to eat and that's about it ( and that's with a little coaxing). It's been over a week we've changed the lighting checked tank parameters and reduced movement in the tank.

how old is he?
as axolotls get older they tend to be more nocturnal and prefer to hide during the day.

It may be too bright for him. Axolotls lived in dark, weedy, muddy canal system, they have no eye lids so will use hides to escape light when kept in a tank. If you fill the tank with elodea or some such plant you will add shade and cover to the tank which will allow him to choose his own light level.

My husband moved the tank light again, now just a small portion is shining in the tank we're going to give that a try for a while. We also got him a few plants, they're not very tall yet though. Thank you any imput helps.
