I live with two other people, and they are sick every single day. Vomiting, coughing, all these problems. But I am never sick, I'm immune to anything and everything. I thought, could it be my Axolotls (Or iguana) ? It would make sense. I never wash my hands after cleaning/handling animals because I'm nasty like that. My body could simply be just used to all these diseases. Could it be diseases/viruses from my Axolotls?
NOTE: It is possible it's not the Axies, because both people I live with smoke a lot and drink.

You probably should start washing your hands, considering the risk of salmonella. And you could spread that to others if it's on your hands. I keep hand sanitizer next to my tank at the very least. As for anything else, I have no idea.

I dunno, vomiting and coughing sounds like it has to do with smoking and drinking.

* I would start washing your hands to improve your hygiene practices. Before laying blame to the animals I would question the hygiene practices of your roommates and adjust yours to include hand washing and see if over all health of your mates increases.

I got my axolotls from a lab class, and my professor said that they do not carry any diseases communicable to humans. Iguanas, however, do carry salmonella, so you should always wash your hands after handling them.

That professor is wrong. All amphibians and reptiles have a chance to carry salmonella. Even dogs can transfer salmonella to humans by licking their faces. Sometimes the animal doesn't carry salmonella, sure, but hygienic practices should always be in place, since you never know.

Go down to the salmonella section. http://www.axolotl.org/health.htm Also, with the trusty power of google, you'll come up with some research papers on it

No wonder everyone at your house is sick all the time with you spreading all that bacteria.. You are the outbreak monkey or in this case the outbreak axolotl.

Well I guess I should probably start washing my hands.
I'll see if that makes everything better. And if it does, I'm going to feel like a jerk for putting everyone else through their sickness.

I would put all the blame on their lifestyle, if they clean themselves up and are still ill start looking around for another cause.

I see it as a combination of factors - - The OP should wash their hands after having them literally in water with dissolved feces and urine in it...and the roommates would have a better shot of fighting off disease from touching soiled areas of the house if they took better care of themselves.

I've also been known to not wash my hands after handling animals. I'm pretty immune to most things in that realm.

1.) salmonella is carried in the guts of all sorts of things, reptiles of all sorts (including avian reptiles), amphibians, people. Poop is full of bacteria.

2.) I have it on good authority that axolotls can carry chlamydia.

Chlamydia? That's kind of hilarious, actually.

Chlamydia..? I'll research a bit more on that. That is a little bit funny. I don't think anyone has chlamydia though.

my aunty had chlamydia in her eyeball. It was like congunctavitis that would'nt go away untill they found out what it really was. o_o

looks like it can infect all sorts of things

Makes me wonder what other species can carry human diseases of that I'll. Also, how they are transmitted between species...

Armadillos can carry and transmit leprosy to humans. Gross isn't it?

This has to be the funniest thread I've read in a long time... from "WASH YOUR HANDS!" to "Axolotls spread chlamydia..." haha

r u guys joking about chlamydia? I really hope so. How would one contract chlamydia from an axolotl?

I am not joking. It was a German keeper who couldn't figure out what was wrong with his axolotls, and for some reason they did a test for chlamydia... I'll see if I can dig up the the account.

I reach in turtle water and then eat a Hoagie all the time without washing my hands. I never get sick......lol.
