Someone asked me about axolotl teeth. Do they point backwards? Now I've been bitten a couple of times while handfeeding so I don't think they have proper teeth - maybe hard ridges?

What do you call them?

Do they point backwards?

I don't know why they asked. I think they thought I just have tiger salamanders. But they think differently after I showed them the axolotl page!

Axolotl have very fine teeth on both the upper and lower jaws... I can't any information on which direction they face, but as they are barely noticeable they seem to function as a means to grip rather than puncture. It seems the strength lies in the jaws.

They're not quite 'teeth' in the technical sense. More like rough, bony ridges.
