Question: Axolotl Tank Cycling- How To House 2 inch babies

What's the point of having 3 filters running for a 40 gallon tank? And an air pump.

You can't over filter a tank, the more filtration the better, an air pump will keep your water cooler as the bubbles disrupt the surface it will cause additional evaporation. I just think that it's a fun, easy, and cheap project that will enhance the life of your axolotls so why not do it? If you don't have an air pump then that's one reason I guess.

I currently don't and think its a waste of time since ill have more than enough filtration once I get my filters, evaporation isn't a problem.

Also I guess the original point was that you would be fine with the u2 and u1 with the bottle filter for a 40 gallon, you wouldn't need to upgrade anything as both the u1 and u2 are fantastic mechanical filters, the u2 only has a limited amount of bio filtration so the bottle with those two would be fantastic. Was trying to help you save a few $$.

Just to throw this out there for anyone who sees it, right now amazon has 100 gallon air pumps on sale for $14 I just got one in the mail yesterday it's amazing, you can run multiple air stones, bottle filters, sponge filters, and bubble wands all off one pump! It's the tetra model is anyone is interested.

Why would I take the time and materials to make a sub-par filter that makes an aquarium look so un-natural, when I could just run the internal Fluval 2 and then the Marineland Penguin 350 or 400, more than enough filtration, and then I'll just add a water pump, not worried about evaporation, it's not a big deal. Thanks for the idea, but I'd rather not when I can just buy a good filter, it's not that expensive either, when I get paid, that is.

Most likely taking the Fluval 1 plus out because it doesn't really even put water out, just putting it in there for some extra filtration till I get one of the Penguin filters... It has like no flow at all, just a bit of water coming out of the outflow.

Okay yeah if it's broken then don't use it. The bottle filter is not sub par, it's the same exact thing as an expensive sump but smaller. A sump is good because it allows a ton of space for biological media which balances your water out, the bottle filter is an amazing alternative for that if you don't have a drilled tank which most people don't.. I think they look really cool actually, I used a cool looking bottle (voss) so it's not an eyesore at all, the one in the video looks rough because he used an ugly yellow sponge and an ugly bottle. That's the great thing about diy, you can make everything exactly the way you want. Like for me, I didn't use a sponge because I have good mechanical filtration already, I just wanted more bio filtration.
I'm not sure exactly what you mean about the water pump thing... A water pump would be pretty bad in an axolotl tank if it's just being used to push water around. Your tank won't be cold enough for an axolotl without something to make it cooler, I use a small USB fan taped to the side aimed down at the water, keeps it around 65 degrees. My smaller tank (15 gallon) stays around 68 with the lid off of it and evaporation from the sponge filter and HOB filter splashing the surface.

I live in Ontario, the highest it gets in summer in my aquarium is about 22 or so, and right now without heaters, it can get as low as 11 C, so it's cold, and the average is around 16 or so during the day, I just have heaters in the tank to make the bacteria grow faster.

I would put the pump in for aeration, it would provide bubbles of oxygen, not water flow, so I don't understand where you got that from? I mean, water pump meaning air pump, you know, bubbler in other words? Not literally a huge *** water pump. >_>

Haha sorry, water pump usually means a powerhead which are good for a lot of situations but I wasn't sure how it would cool a tank.

My temperatures are perfect axolotl temperatures, in the summer it can get a bit too hot which I used to fix by taking a frozen water bottle and letting it melt in the tank, cooling it off, or two, with a tank this big.

I personally just use 1 filter thats big enough for my tank, it has sponge and a little department for cermaic media. It cost me £20.00 and was my lfs own brand filter, ive had no problems with it.
As long as your turning over 3-4 times your tank volume every hour, anything will do, i have a 100L tank and my filter turns over 350L/ph.
I just have one bubble wand in there too for oxygen :)
To move the baby axies to their clean tub i agree just use a tiny shrimp net or even a tea strainer! just make sure the temp in the two tubs is the same.
Good luck with your new babies

I got 3 filters for $60 last weekend , a marineland penguin 150B, a marineland penguin 200B, and a ex30 I have the 2 marineland filters filtering the tank and the internal Fluval 2 filtering it as well, with fish food decomposing as the ammonia source. So that's about 100 gallons or so worth of filtration maybe more I'm too lazy to look and I don't remember all I know is that it's way more filtration than I need, currently the flow is strong in the tank but I'm not worrying about it till the Axies get put in there since the stronger the flow, the more oxygen for the bacteria to grow, the tank is also at about 27 C OR 81 F for the tank to grow bacteria faster.

I also decided to keep the 3 lotls in a 20 gallon with a huge plant to keep them from finding each other too much and with 100% water changes and about 5 inches of water, probably going to add an airstone just for some water movement and oxygen, lemme know what you think, the breeder selling these lotls is the one that I came up with the idea of the tank with.

ALSO, some updated pics of the little guys from 2 days ago that the breeder sent me, of my reserved lotls, the leucy has all limbs and is awesome and healthy, the wild type has all his limbs but one of them is regenerating, and the albino has his front limbs fully in and his back ones just poking out, CHECK EM OUT AND LEMME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK :D!

Haha 3 HOB filters on one 20 gallon tank? Must look pretty epic

It's a 40 gallon when did I say it's a 20? xD and I'm not using the tetra ex30 on it since I don't have an extra plug in that area on my power bar and its missing the tube that goes in the water. 2 HOB bio wheel filters and the Fluval 2 internal filter. :p

The 20 gallon has no filtration and is just with an airstone and some plants it's a temp tank with 100% water changes till the babies can go in the 40 gallon cycled tank, haha. Wouldn't dare to put 3 Axies in a 20 gallon dude.

3 babies in a 20 gallon is a ton of space, 40 gallon for 3 babies.. It'll be hard to feed them for sure.

Well they'll be going in the 40 gallon when 4 inches or so and ill hand feed em. The 20 with 100% water changes is until then. Haha ??
