i have read about the axolotl and that its origins are mexicos lake systems, could anybody tell me what their habitat was, as being an ex fishkeeper(only axo's now) i always set the tanks to the fishes natural enviroment. as much info as possible would be appreciated. i know some people have no substrate and others (myself) use sand, and larger pebbles/stones, does this mimick their natural enviroment?, would there be any foliage, and should i give them dry land, kinda a newbie to axolotls(about 8months) but learning lots thanks to this site and its members,,,,,,,,,happy xmas to all

John,

No dry land needed - they are TOTALLY aquatic. I guess larger pebbles are like the lake beds in xochimilco - but having had those - they are a nightmare to keep clean. When you have other lake-dwellers in there cleaning out the muck between the stones plus a lake current then I'm sure it's fine - but you're doing the right thing with sand. Sand is a perfectly natural substrate for them, and I can totally recommend live plants for a nice healthy tank. Make sure there's a nice low current and plenty of dark little nooks and crannies they can hide in.

Can you show us a picture of your current set-up?

many thanks for your replies, i will put some pics up with this post, but will have to apologise about the quality of pics,(camera on phone is rubbish) maybe santa will bring me a digital, i'm sure i've been good this year, haha. my setup is a boyu tl550 marine aquarium, which i bought originally as i was going to go marine, then i came across the axolotl, nemo is no longer in the frame, my 3 kids are absolutely in love with the axxies, 2girls(5and6) love our albino(golden albino)it has pink on it, girls love pink and my boy(4 yrs) loves both, got a green/melanoid/wildtype? my girls feed them and have no problem handling waxworms, earthworms or superworms, unlike my boy, who runs when the worms come out(needs to toughen up haha). the tank is 128 litres, i have a large fake mountain, the axxies like to hide inside, sand substrate, a fake plant/tree and some large pebbles/stones that me and kids borrowed from the beach (we werent collecting shells like most, our buckets were heavy!) planning on 4 or 5 foot tank some time january or february,,,and a digital camera! i usually only have my moonlights on in tank but have them on for photos,
