Axolotl habitat

thanks for the suggestions everyone. I just read that about Tahitian moon sand :(, a real shame, and it was nice looking sand.

art sand looks good and I think the multiple crazy colors could have lots of possibilities! Order Safe Sand for Sand Art, Arts and Crafts Sand, Safe Sandbox Sand this stuff is claimed safe and I think its. grain size is tiny, but 1 3/4" depth would be 40 bucks and Im thinking 5 dollars of natural sand would look good and I can inspect it thoroughly first.

I will read up on that walstad some more, very interesting indeed.

I was thinking of doing a tutorial cause Ive got some more material still and want to make some another background. but I just lost my leucistic and am worried about my gold albino now :(, Im wondering if the mushroom house had something to do with it though its been in there for more then two months it had an odd odor on the unglazed inside and I found both axies dead inside at different times, so I destroyed it.
Im gonna make my own with some sculpey.

I did an autopsy and found lots of sand in the track it wasnt really stuck but obviously this sand is bad news.

so for now im planting it and letting it grow while my gold is in a bare bottom 30 gallon which it doesnt like cause it has not traction but Ill fix that as well today.

well my gold axie is doing great now, big poops which is something I had not seen before, whether because the substrate was too dark or blockage from that evil sand I dont know, but he is doing awesom and growing quickly.

Im gonna go ahead and get a couple more axies before my gold gets too big, Im thinking on getting 2 or 3 but what do you guys think?
I want at least a GFP wildtyple cause the emerald eyes and usually lighter body color, a GFP Albino cause it is supposed to be radioactive green when mature still, and if there was a third a regular white albino. I want them to breed as well and im buying unsexed juvies from Jay so its an odds game. I want them to not be to crowded either, the filtration will be first rate and the maintenaince will be regular but what about just general floorspace?

capped the planted tank with some sand and its looking better but I wont put anyone in it till its perfect, all plants must be thriving before I do that. Other then that I got the last led for the lighting and will build that soon.

I have a green coloured sand from bunnings its completely safe for axies and is about 3.50$ a kg it comes in black too :)

well im gonna get two more axies, GFP wildtype and a white albino. My gold is growing out of control and im doing another waterchange then moving him/her to new home finally!

I want to find some nice river rocks to add for interest and I got a couple cool peices of driftwood soaking but they stink for some reason. Im gonna add some bleach to their soak.

pics coming.

need more anubis I think, and hopefully jungle val can start growing fast so it creates a more shaded enviroment. lots of loose java ferns in there waiting for driftwood and more rocks. Im thinking of dropping a number of 2-3 inch lavarocks in there cause the color is exactly like the background and I could tie off a few javaferns too them. hope my axie likes it so far.

It's looking great so far!

tested my water parameters other day, 0-0-2.5 , keep in mind that my water after prime conditioner is 0-0-20! farm country.

I say it was 2.5 cause it wasn't perfectly bright yellow like the 0 is but it was certainly not a single bit orange like the 5 ppm color I figured it wasn't half way in between but rounded up to it. API master Test Kit, which is a liquid kit. I've only got a couple of the terrestrial plants putting out new leaves, the other are still just developing their nice water roots, I am sure that once its in full swing that Ill have 0-0-0

In other words the plant setup is success. except I'm still getting some diatom brown algae on glass and my anubias. of course my axie is really happy and 5.5 inches now.

Im also running my grech filter full blast 370 gph!:D the setup allows for zero flow issues in the tank. my axie can drift gently down without being pushed off course by flow, yet this is easily 9x circulation an hour.

my jungle val is growing fast now and shooting out some new plants! brown algae is under control. new growth on anubis and swords as well.

Ive got a bunch more anubis on the way and my driftwood hopefully will be ready soon, then I can have it looking the way I want.

just recieved 10 more bunches of anubias, gotta love ebay! also added duckweed and some other kind of floater that has pads about 5 times the size of duckweed, ill get picks soon.
also planted a couple patches of moss in the sand like a carpet, my axie love sitting in it.

my driftwood is still soaking but it is not sinking, I may buy some mopani or something.

Driftwood takes FOREVER. I have a nice big piece in my 30 gallon that my axies love. It took 2 months of soaking before it finally stayed down on its own.

Well ill be patient then, about a month in I think. I may still buy a better peice, ebay had some cool stuff.

lots of loose java fern still! but my driftwood soak isnt working out so well, the water is kinda stinky and is cloudy, I think im gonna buy some mopani or something fake that looks good so I can get it done with.

also my led light setup, 2 10 watt blues with dimmer and 3 20watt whites. this will hang well above my tank and cast down light on the plants in back as well as light up the tank enough for the moderate light plants in there.

so im gonna do a write up later this winter on how I built this tank, but it is leaking now so im gonna tear part of the back part down and build the support structure from glass instead of wood so I can rely on the glass to hold water and not just the cement. I'm also gonna build something similar for the back of my 58 gallon tall, just out of glass (for now) and will post on that as well in that write up. this filter setup is awesome for water parameter!!

You have a gold albino there, gorgeous although I'm not sure whether its just the photo, the gills are looking a little forward, do you have a filter in there?

you might check the thread for my filter. the gills are forwards sometimes but have continued to grow longer at same time. alot of the time they are back, axie is very happy.

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
