Axolotl feeding

That is why I originally said "I don't know, but I wouldn't do it!" basically. My lotls love their earthworms, occassional blackworms, and whatever ghost shrimp or snail they can pin down in the tank!

How long have you had these axolotls ?

This lot? About 6 months.

Previously had one for 7 years.

In between, about 18 years of breeding fish, cichlids in particular.

As an instrument tech with experience in water treatment, when I got back into them I spent considerably on setting them up with good filtration and in particular chillers, and I keep my water cycled perfectly.

I did my research for this particular species and made sure I had it all in order, including food.

My point has been consistent throughout this thread.

Yes, worms are best. No, meat is not the root of all evil. Things are repeated over and over on the net until they are considered gospel, sometimes inaccurately.

I do think the bloated pic is alarmist and possibly unrelated. One poster reported crying when she saw it.

I did say you could call me noob, which I don't consider or use as a "mean little word". My kids call me a noob and it's funny.

I got called a towel on another forum. :(

So your experience of this species is keeping an adult alive for half of its expected life expectancy and another group for six months ? Is this correct ? Just checking because you are advising feeding a food source which is considered very poor by most experienced axolotl keepers.

Except they're not. They even admitted worms are best, can we ALL stop attacking each other and attack the topic instead? There's no need to get so nasty with one another, that's not accomplishing anything...

Edit: and the OP got their answer, so.

thanks for your answers!!! i have an unlimitted source of earthworms (even i have to give some of them away ), but the smaller is "special" is quiet exquisit, i won´t feed it until it likes earthworms, it also likes fishes (Cnesterodon sp.) a lot, it goes crazy when I approach to it, but unfortunately i don´t have a lot to feed it everyday (this fish is so prolific, but they are so small, they are like cold water guppies, but less agressive)

good decision Matias. Wait til its hungry and dangle a worm in front of him and I can pretty much assure you that he will snap it up!:D

There's nothing nasty about asking for some bodies experience, it establishes credibility (or lack of) for their advice/opinion.
"Except they're not" ...... What ? I am assuming you wrongly thought that I was suggesting that meat was to be used as a sole food source , the poster was very clear that worms are best as a food source but meat was OK, I was disagreeing with him.
There seems to be several people accusing other people ( mainly me tbh) of being nasty in threads, you guys need to lighten up try responding with facts or at least a well considered opinion rather than start crying over other people being mean.

Do you breed your own fish ? If not make sure their quarantined.

yes, of course. there are wild populations in every water system in my zone (semi-arid zone), but they are overpopulated of this tiny fish and are plenty of parasytes and fungus and bacteria (one time i brought home Jenynsia sp. and there were full of lernea, but luckily they are fine now, and some are a "special" food for axolotls, but they don´t multipplicate as fast as Cnesterodon).

I think you should read my posts more thoroughly if you're going to make comments like that.

I did read your posts thoroughly and my comment reports what your experience of axolotls is, or was I incorrect in what I said ?

So frustrating...

I SAID:

1. Worms are the best.

2. UNCOOKED meat is not ideal but not as bad as some people would say (would you please post some proof of these dire consequences, not strawman BS like "everyone says").

3. The post with the bloated axolotl was alarmist and unfounded (and while you're quoting peoples background in the hobby, posted by someone with 3 baby axies owned for about 6 months yet is assertively/aggressively advising all and sundry, so if you're calling experience do it for ALL not just those you don't like the opinion of). You talk about the sins of giving bad/unfounded advice, here is a classic example, that just happens to fall in line with your point of view.

While on the topic of experience, 7 years of keeping this animal would certainly not be at the top of the list here, it's certainly a long way from the bottom.

Of the thousands/whatever of members here, what percentage have had them for 7 years or had aquariums for as long? Plenty but not the majority.

You really offend me with you cherry picking, selective quoting of my words and strawman smearing.

I have not advised anyone at all. I have stated my opinion and what I have experienced.

Raw meats are not bad for axolotls, but still should not be staple diet. From what I have heard its more like raw meat is more of a treat, then a diet as some pets(not just axolotls) will start to turn down their normal food because of how good the raw meat is. But other then that have heard more horror stories about feeder fish and shrimp and snails being eaten then raw meat.

I hope this link helps you guys out with this discussion.

Though 7 years is not long to have an axolotl, it is not unusual expecially if you had them 5-10years ago as the information has changed. I met someone who bought an axolotl from me and she had one about 10years ago that died at 7 years old. After talking to her a bit more realized it wasn't negligence or improper care, just the amount of research on axolotl care and disease etc has changed over the years. She was doing research before getting the juvies fromme and told me how much different their care requirements were! It was actually interesting to sit down and talk with her about it as i have only had axolotls were just over a year

Thank you very much.

As it goes we've got rain and it has cooled a bit, so I will try with the local suppliers and see if they've got worms in again.

Where I live it's too hot to walk on the footpath in bare feet recently, and the suppliers said they'd lost whole shipments that died in the delivery trucks.

For the record, mine have only eaten worms ever, except for the last 6 weeks.

Can't feed them what I can't get.

Hope they're not meat junkies (zombies?) now.
