Soaking is probably your best bet.

I've been waffling about this half the night: I want to say that old bricks (pre 1900's?) are probably safer than new because it seems like they would have less 'additives', and are more likely to be just pure clay. But then again, there weren't any manufacturing guidelines in the vast majority of architectural history. So take it for what it's worth.

I know, i know, Kaysie. I really didn´t mean to give the impression that one should be nonchalant about this stuff! I just wanted to make a point that not everything that leeches is a problem. Of course it depends on what´s being leeched, but i didn´t want people to have an unjustified fear of anything that can leech just because it leeches. I saw someone friking out about tannins in another forum (i felt so dirty saying that) and i suposse that´s what made me want to make the point.

Honestly I know my bricks were soaked previously to me obtaining them. Even so before I used them I put them in a 5 gallon bucket and poured boiling water in there. Same way I do for rocks I get from the outside. Pouring boiling water onto rocks I got from a river or stream always gave off a strong smell!
