I have found those worm farms not to be much good. I brought one from bunnings and my axie does not like the type of worm that is in them. (They are kind of red in colour) I have since found out that these type of worms taste nasty to axies. Has anyone had any luck with these worms? I have tried cutting them up and everything.
 
Hi all, we're new to axies and here in Brisbane our tank temperature hasn't dropped below 27 degrees for the last week. I noticed someone mentioned the chillers, we found out they range in price from $700 (Australian) to $2500 or thereabouts. The $700 does a 160 litre tank. Has anyone tried these, are they worth it? The frozen water bottles seems to make only half a degree drop in the temperature only.
The water temperature combined with the difficulties feeding them (they won't eat pellets unless they virtually land in their mouths and the pellets break up and really pollute the water), they will eat frozen bloodworm cubes if fed by hand, but won't look for food, they won't eat meal worms, I'm not sure where to get clean earthworms will make them a challenge to keep, but they definately seem to be worth the effort. Here's a picture of them.

got myself a chiller the other day... $1200

It, in my mind is a great investment and since having my chiller my tank temp has never risen over 20 or gone below 20. It sits at a stable... 20 degrees c.

Like i said. A great investment and well worth it if you can afford it.
 
Thanks Brendan. Thanks also to the people who mentioned fans blowing on the tank, I've actually got the water down to 25 degrees. I think the chiller would be a good investment, when you figure how much axies cost, around $25 each in Brisbane, so it would pay itself off eventually.
 
Hi guys,

has anyone had problems with fungus?
i seem to be having a battle with it at the moment.
i had 2 ax's for about a year and all was going great until i got another 2 ax's and all was well for a week. over the last 3 weeks, the fungus has spread from one to the other to the other. so far one has a shrinking tail, one has gill and tail damage, one has gill damage only and the other has gill and mouth damage.

i have been doing daily salt baths, but don't seem to be winning this fight. i am also giving them time in the fridge as i had read that lower temps can assist healing.
i have asked (on the other thread titles "its getting very confusing") and have had great input by many other ax keepers.
i have tried to get FURAN-2 (anti-fungal treatment) from about 6 aquariums in sydney; sutherland shire) but have had no luck.
has anyone been able to locate this med?
what other meds are suitable.

Hey guys. i know its not recommended but has anyone had any luck with keeping other fish besides feeder fish with Axolotls? i have guppies and some form of stripy zebra looking feeder fish in with my two axies. The axies occasionally eat one or two but i wanted something a bit bigger for decoration i.e Paradise Fish. Any help would be appreciated.
 
Brad - Adding fish to the tank is putting your axolotls health at risk.

The reason it isn't recommended is because it very seldom works out. Feeder fish can nip the axolotls gills off and spread disease to your axolotls, especially if they are coming straight from the pet store.

If you feel you have to use live fish as a supplemental food source you should raise the fish yourself (in a separate tank) and keep them disease and parasite free.

Gill nipping will keep your axolotls in a constant state of stress which generally leads to bad health and disease.

I just do not think it is worth the risk.
 
hi all
im new to the site , names cath and i have 2 axies. one of which is very sick, she ,( i thinks its a she) just wont eat , im hoping when the tank cools a bit she will eat again, she ate a pellet yesterday , but spat it out later, must of been to big for her, hoping she eats soon or i might lose her.

Hi cathy, welcome to the group. If you have a question about a sick axie then please take a look at the the sick axie section and begin a new thread. You will recieve a much bigger response.

This particular thread was began for one of aussie friends to 'compare notes', preumably about things perculier to aussie axie husbandry. As you can we don't interfere with discussions too much and they can be quite free roaming many often forget the original source topic and meander onto all sorts of other topics.

If you axie is unwell you want the best and quickest reponses you can get. Take a look and if possible try and give us as much info as possible,water temp, water quality, tank set-up axie age/size etc etc. Good luck for now.

I think I'll buy a chiller before next Summer comes around. For the size my new tank is going to be I can get one for around $600. Although expensive I think it would be worth it in the long run.
 
Jarred- I saw some small chillers online (ebay) going for around 150$ US a few weeks back. You'd need a US to Australian converter for the power cord, but those are pretty cheap I think?
 
My axies have short gills an i want big ones 2 of the are about 6 months old an one is 6 years old an can you use air stones i have a small air filter but wasnt sure about airation
