I'm a new newt keeper - bought 2 a couple of days ago and think they're great. They weren't labelled up as anything other than newts, and being new to newts I presumed they were fire-bellies just because they had orangey splodges on their bellies. My research over the past day or so has shown me they're probably warty newts of some sort, possibly fuzhongs?

Can anyone offer further advice - a couple of pics are attached, apologies for quality but they're taken with my mobile phone. Both pics are of the same newt - the other looks the same other than he's darker in colour. I think they're both males.

The second pic makes it look like the newt's tail gets larger towards the end - I think this is just the angle of the photo as the tail is pretty constant in thickness all the way down then tapers to a point.

I have one fuzhong and he looks similer to yours.
If i were you i would look in the species data bank, but i think its a fuzhong although i would look for your self to make sure its not a guangxi which look very similer to fuzhongs.

Thanks for your reply - I had a look at the species data bank and I'm pretty convinced they're fuzhongs... I keep them with four aquatic frogs - I've read lots on here about just keeping newts on their own, but the frogs seem to love the newts company (and vice versa)and the frogs have been much more active since the newts have been in.

Hello Angela,
definitely Paramesotriton, possibly P. fuzhongensis.
Mixing newts with other species/animals really is a bad idea. Please read the article on species mixing disasters on Caudata Culture which you will find here:
http://www.caudata.org/cc/articles/Mixing_disasters.shtml

The increased activity level of your frogs might even be a sign of stress as the newts are potential large predators for them.
Imagine me putting a Siberian tiger in your living room. Would that raise your level of activity?

I do keep my newt in with a couple of fish, I know I should'nt, but there fast cheap fish, it give movent to the tank, and if the newt eats them (witch he has'nt yet.) then it no big deal.

Fish tend to carry bacteria and other kinds of infections. Which is why most people avoid keeping them together with their newts.

With a bit of luck the eye on your newt will heal.
