The ammonia level in my tank keeps going up, I have been cleaning up uneaten food and poo and still the ammonia goes up. I have been doing water changes at least daily. Is there anything I can do to prevent this?
Seriously, though, pretty much the only thing you can do is do water changes every day until the bacteria have got things under control.
You might also test your tap water to see if you get an ammonia reading there. If you do, then it may be because of chemicals in the water. If you get an ammonia reading from your tap water, come back here and we'll move on to the next step.
i tested the tap water and it came back negative ( if there is any there is not enough to tell)
i am having trouble getting the ammonia levels down below 1... i changed about 2/3 the water this morning because i was between 2 and 3 and now i am back up to 2 again from about .75. and i didnt even feed them today. I am using test tubes and drops if that helps at all. am i just doomed to constant water changes until my tank finishes cycling? (it has been a month or so). or am i just overanalyzing this? i just wanna make sure my boys are cool haha. i would hate to think i am putting them under any stress they dont need to be under.
I have two right now in a 15 long... right now i don't have the money to put together another full set up or get a larger tank. Their lengths, one is like 5&1/2 inches they other is getting close to 7. The ammonia has seemed to have stabilized at a little less than .25 ... for right now ha.
