A New Year, a New Season

Last year, I had my first egg on Christmas day, cristatus. This season is starting out well. Last year's baby cristatus are laying eggs, last season karelinii (from Jens stock) are starting to lay like crazy and I pulled my first dozen larvae out of the tank.

Congratulations, Dave! Those karelinii are precocious little breeding machines.

i have a potentially dumb question. the karelinii you gave me are developing well- two are pretty far along and they are long skinny croissants with colors now

my question: they're pretty securely folded in the plastic strips, but from the pictures i've seen this is standard for newts. they won't have any trouble getting out when they're ready, will they?

Beautiful animals Dave. Just a question, how do you feed them to obtain these pretty red bellies?

Elisheba, the eggs will open up nicely when they are ready to hatch. The only larvae that I have ever "helped" to escape from the eggs were the axolotls, which sometimes seem to be stuck in the "gelatin". They would probably be OK without my help, though.

I feed them live blackworms and nightcrawler chunks. The color in the photo is off a little. Their bellies are closer to dayglo orange in the right light

As everyone has said already, very nice! I know what I have to look forward to both short term and long term.

How does the tail look in life? The photo makes it look like it has some irridescense to it.
