8.7 Ph, a little worried.

RO and distilled water are similar, but made by different methods. Both lack minerals and will need to have them added. Spring water is basically ... water from the ground. Check the source, though, as some 'spring water' is actually from the municipal water supply, and most of it is treated in some way.

I think your method will be fine in the short term. Long term, like Jenn said, your pH will drop and you shouldn't need to worry much about it. Have you sourced any sphagnum moss yet? I would get that started right away.

Not yet. I'll probably pick up some moss next time I go to the pet store.

So yeah, I'll probably try that out then. Distilled water + Mineral add ons, or...I've heard it mentioned Perhaps I should try doing a mixture of half tap water and half distilled water for my water changes? Or is my Ph too high for that to work?

Spring water doesn't need anything added to it. It has minerals in it. Distilled and RO are similar in that they will need minerals added back in. All these waters are ph neutral.

We have an RODI filter. We only use it for the saltwater tank because it gets salt added to it anyway.

And don't stress! You have no axies yet so no harm done :) Once you figure it out it won;t be an issue.

I wouldn't say that RO and distilled water are pH neutral. The lab I worked at had RO water that was around pH 5. It depends on the system and the base of the water. Spring water is also rarely neutral.

You'll need to test each batch to determine the pH, and how much needs to be mixed in with your tap water. Here's an article with some information that will help you.

Well when you go and buy it it usually is from my experience anyway. i didn't think it was any other way :O

I bought two jugs of 1) Distilled water 2) Spring water. Both their Ph's were relatively neutral when I tested them. The spring water had a tiny bit of nitrite in it, and I think the distilled water was very soft.

I just really wasn't sure If there was a preference over one or the other.

Distilled water is the definition of soft water. It's had all the minerals removed.

So, would it be safe to just use strictly spring water?

I've seem to have gotten the hang of things. I've just ordered my two leucistic Axolotls. they should arrive on Tuesday, the 8th.

Thanks again for everyone's help. If I have any further questions you'll be sure to see me bugging all of you again, lol X)
