3D Background

I'm looking to build one of these, and I was wondering if you could tell me how you hid the filter intake. I don't have any axies yet, so I figured now would be a good time to tackle a project like this instead of subjecting them (and me) to stress by having to relocate them repeatedly.

Since the back (which sticks to the glass) is flat I cut out a square through all the layers so the inlet could fit, but hide in it. Post pictures if you can!

Love your background, it looks amazing!
I'm working on making a 3d section in my large tank out of foam; I was originally going to try the cement method but that failed miserably. I was wondering if you could tell me the name/brand of the polyurethane resin spray you used? So far I've been unable to locate some. Your method sounds so much easier and more effective.
Thanks!

Thanks Nex! Its still holding strong and I agree that the cement fails miserably, it was the worst! I don't recall the actual name of the can, my boyfriend bought it from Mitre 10 for about $60. It is marine grade polyuerethane and it works best with an airbrush sort of machine. Its light blue if that helps?

I'm having trouble sourcing some poly, but I have come across this which I think may be a go-er. According to another thread on here, any clear water-based poly is safe to use.
Krylon Fusion is readily available on ebay here in Aus :)

Cabothane Clear Water Based - Cabots

Hey I'm not familiar with that one but I would be less anxious if it was marine grade. It's in the same sections as spray paints and stuff in mitre 10.

Try buying off crockers paint m - they are cheaper and more of a colour range. Please post pictures when you are finished!

Hey I'm just wondering if you can tell me what brand of resin did you use? Thank you

Background is still going strong and no issues!

I don't recall the brand as this was like 6 months ago however I do know I bought it from
Mitre 10, for around $60, it was marine grade and it had light blue on it.. Sorry

I am thinking of trying something like this. Your results are gorgeous!

Questions: (I hope I didn't miss the answers you already provided.) Did you permanently attach the background to the back/bottom, or is it weighted? How much dent/damage protection does the polyurathane provide to the styrofoam? Are all sides of the styrofoam coated?

Thank you I'm still in love with my background ( I usually get over my layout in 2-3 months) I attached the pieces with ALOT of silicone since I didn't want it to rip away and float.

The poly creates a pretty decent protection like I can tap it with my fingernail and it won't puncture but if I really dig my finger in I probably could cause a dent or even a hole.. But as for axolotl damage - there is none.

And yes all sides are coated in 2-3 sprays of poly. Back, sides, front, underneath - every little crevase I got into. Better to be safe than sorry!

I really wanna try something like this, but I know I would fail miserably lol

I failed my first go.. Practice makes perfect! Pretty sure everything cost me under 100AUD.. And it was fun. No harm in trying :) I would love to see your creation if you ever make one! Or pm me if you need specific help
