my axie tank has been at a constant 27 degrees for a year now and has been fine. she is not very active but i have had no problems at all with my axie at this temperature, thats not to say that every axie would be fine at this temperature and that i do not recommend this, i have bought a chiller and am waiting for my tank to cycle. charlie how are you planning to keep your tank at this temperature because sydney has had some high temperatures recently.
There are other reasons, besides temperature, for not keeping axolotls with tropical fish (just in case you were thinking of trying). And if there aren't any tropical fish in the same tank, it would certainly be easy enough to allow the tank temp to go lower in winter.
We were thinking a chiller and heater (would take some fine tuning to get the right balance.)
and weren't thinking of the fish and axies combined in the same tank, just that my flatmate and I were thinking that a bigger tank could be cool. 4 or 6 feet. And if we got the 6 I was thinking of partitioning the tank...
I don't know about you, but our axies are definitely not happy at 22 deg cel. Temp not as bad as some of the aussie temps/prob seems quite mild; but our axies have not been happy. All our axies swimming all over the place madly. Our wildtypes trying to jump out and our leucs/white axies tails went bright red but once we got all their tanks temps down to 18 deg. their tails returned to normal colour and all our axies calmed down. Why don't you just have a separate tank for your axies and fish? That way you're not stressing your axies.
as everyone has said 22C is bad. if you want to keep axies and fish in one tank make the divider water proof, why not turn the tank into two? if i was you id just get the chiller and keep it at around 18C, thatd make them nice and comfortable
Charlie, just get the chiller and skip the heater. My axies are quite happy at the moment at 9C, so there isn't really any problem with them being cold. They love it.
dane - 20 degrees isnt something to kick yourself over. my tank has been at around 20-22 since x-mas and my axies are both doing fine with no signs of stress or illness.
Me too Alex (and it doesnt drop much below that, EVER). From what i gather (body language etc) they are fine. I just make sure im on a constant lookout for skin diseases (fungas and all that jazz).
Dont get me wrong, im not comfortable with the temps. But as long as they are ok, and im on lookout - it eases my mind alittle.
