1 Month 1 Week old! just a few q's

hey, i was just wondering when do axoltols start to develop their lungs? my little ones, almost 1month and 2 weeks old have started gulping air from the top like the adults. are they fine without an air stone? and a couple of the baby axolotls have one small eye and one normal eye, i was wondering if anyone knows if its a genetic thing, the mother has one small/bad eye, i just thought it was blind. :S heres a pic.

hey, I've just had about fifty hatchling and was told to have an airstone even when they were eggs.

Shane - that eye thing is strange, thank you for posting a picture of it.

I have read that there are strains of blind axolotls, but I do not know if they have "small eyes" as I have never seen a picture of one.

I tend to think that yours is probably a genetic thing, but I could be wrong.

just a few more questions lol. i didnt want to start a new thread. my baby axoltols are going really well. they are now fully on blood worm and the fungus that was kill alot of them is now gone. ive not got 34 left mostly around 2-3cms. but i was wondering how long does it take for them to get around 5 - 10 cms? any info would be appreciated. thanks

It depends on temperature, how much they eat, and genetics. From hatching to about 10cm, they double in size every two, give or take. So if they're 3 cm now, in 2 weeks they should be around 6cm (and showing signs of front legs), and in a month from now, around 10 cm and showing signs of back legs.

well shane my axies are around the same age as your and my biggest is nearly 4.5cms and the rest are around 4 so maybe yours are slower growers or maybe the fungus has something to do with it. i have been feeding my babies on blood worms only for nearly a month now and that really sped up their growth.lol

Joan- are the baby axies supposed to show signs of arms at around 6m cause i have other babies that are showing signs of front arms and they are only around 1.5 cm. i thought that was weird cause even my other babies never grew their front arms when they are that little.lol. and also my older babies have all nearly fully grown back legs as well.

I think this depends on temperature. At warmer temps, they'll grow bigger faster, but don't actually DEVELOPE faster. So they'll get bigger, but won't grow legs any faster. Or they won't grow as fast, but will still grow legs at the same time as warm ones. The fungus might also be stunting them. Mine were about 3cm when they started growing arms (or at least when I was noticed them).

yeah mine have all four limbs now. they look so cute. miniature axoltols. They are all growing well now. there are alot that have grown really big really fast, but its strange because they are all in the same tank. the water is pretty cold but i dont know the exact temp. how would i be abl to make the water warmer? or shouldnt i bother?. they see to be fine how they are... :S lol sorry everything is all over the place. they are such a hand full but im so glad i decided to look after them.

ill have to post more pics soon lol. thanks for your replies :D

Blind axolotls could either have a very small eye or even no eyes at all, I hear it may happen with Albinos.

rheann i really like how you have covered the pipe(i think) in gravel makes it look alot more natral!

Thanks Alex, here are some more pictures. That darn rock cave took me forever to cover, both the inside and out. I don't know if I will ever do a project like that again, I might change my mind once I get my new tank set up

Shane, I found a frog out in the wild one time when I was a child that only had one eye and it was on the side. I felt bad for him and took him home. I later took him back to the same pond feeling he could survive on his own.

Some frogs develop abnormalities like extra legs or eyes. After seeing your little female with the small eye and one of her babies with the same condition, i would think that it is genetic.

yeah i was guessing it was genetic it would be a huge coincidence if 10 out of the 34 had the same thing. wow that pipe looks really good. ive been thinking about it for a while but havent bothered with it. you've inspired me to do something! lol.
