Have kept N crocatus for 2.5 years. Breeder raised them fully aquatic with lots of live floating plants to cling too. I tank them the same way with lots of floating plants. Hornwort, lloydiella and elgeria najas all work well in cooler water setups. Anubias barteri and Java fern planted in sand or in a clay flowerpot w/sand allows them places to explore and access floating plants. The adults occasionally use a 5" x 3" floating "plastic island" to crawl on but are always back in the water within an hour. They do like to cling to the glass just below the top edge. N. crotatus are the "most escaped" of my newt species, so a tight fitting glass top with a couple of bricks on top has worked for me. Good luck!
