If I don't frequently change the water in that tank, the worms start to overwhelm it, so I stir up the gravel and siphon out 80 percent of the water every three days or so. But I wouldn't recommend doing this heavy and frequent a water change unless you're then filling the tank back up with already cycled water, like I am.
I don't know for sure what kind of worms these are. Ester, who has a similar infestation, suggested they might be some kind of flatworm. Terry seconded that to say that they're aquarium flatworms that might have been introduced together with the tubifex worms I feed my larvae.
Most of the "critters" that suddenly appear in aquariums are the same micro-organisms that you would find in local ponds, streams, and puddles. They come in as random spores, either through the air or from the dirt that we bring into our homes on our feet (or pets feet) and such. http://www.caudata.org/cc/articles/Tank_critters.shtml
By the way, if your newt eats those Newt Bites, that's fine. If not, there are better choices for food.
They look identical to a earthworm just very tiny only about 1" long and smaller than a piece of thread. They have that band like a earthworm and everything just they are white.Did they come from the water i'am kind uneasy to drink it now.I'am going to get some blood worms and better food when i go out for spring break.
Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
sorry I am having a hard time trying to upload the pictures- I have them saved on my hard drive... any suggestions-the prompts here are not allowing for downloads that way as far as I can tell. Thanks
