Hello guys this is my first post. I have been looking on this forum for about a month now and have finally decided to join as i am going to buy a tank tomorrow and 2 axolotl in two weeks, I have some questions (and im sure hundreds more to follow!), im pretty confident about the set up, you should see my notes! So my questions are more about feeding, here goes...
1) Can you feed frozen earthworms or must they always be live?
2) Do any of you have womeries as a constant food source for them? Online fishing shops sell earth worms in batches of 50 so I was thinking about making a wormerie from a large plastic bottle so they stay alive and fresh and replacing when they have run out. I prefer the though of this to a permanant one as worms produce lots of juice which i dont really want to deal with (i hope this makes sense to at least one of you)
3) Can you have live daphina in the tank with the axolotl as a constant live food source?
Many thanks for anyone who has read this jumbled essay, i look forward to replys.

Re: Womeries and feeding axolotl. Im new!

Hi there and welcome!

I will try my best, I am still learning!

I'm not sure about freezing earthworms, but I do know that no axolotl can resist a nice wiggly worm! This encourages to hunt too! I sometimes drop the worm near my axie and it wriggles about and my axie enjoys to hunt it.

I have a worm farm, in a big plastic tub with compost in and holes in the lid, and every couple of days I notice baby worms in my farm! My worms have always been okay in the plastic tub, just make sure its secure with holes in for air! Many people on here have worm farms as they are a good constant food source and one of the best foods for axolotls. However, be sure to give your axie a variety of foods!

As for the daphina, I should imagine it's okay, but I dont know much about the subject of live foods.

I hoped I helped a bit! Hopefully someone more experienced will come along soon!

What types of axolotls are you planning to get btw? And can we pleeeeease see your little cuties when you get them? :D:D

Hey, thanks for getting back to me. Yeah thinking about it i would much rather give them live worms as it will be so much better for them. Worms actually freak me out a bit but as i have said to my friends soon its not going to be about me any more! So your worm farm is in a plastic tube, does it produce any liquid or are they quite happy in there, do you keep it in doors and does it smell?? And you you ever have to clean it out?

Re: Womeries and feeding axolotl. Im new!

Oh and I am planning to get one of the white ones with pink dreads and a greeny brown one. I am going to take pics of the whole process and post here. Fun fun fun :D

Re: Womeries and feeding axolotl. Im new!

Thats okay!

When I was at school I had a friend who used to scream at the sight of a worm, this mostly happened in P.E :p

My worms don't really produce any liquid, the only liquid I seem to have is if I have accidently put a bit too much water in the tub to keep the compost moist. I do keep my worms indoors, but somewhere cool, but not freezing. They only smell if you overload them with food. I asked what to feed the worms and very helpful member of the forum posted me a list of do's and don'ts it can be found here: http://www.caudata.org/forum/f46-be...f58-sick-axolotl/76406-my-axolotl-sick-2.html (I hope I did this right!)

I haven't had to clean it out no, as long as you don't overload your worms with food then it shouldn't get too messy or smelly

Oh and cool choices of axies! I have the same at the moment!

Re: Womeries and feeding axolotl. Im new!

Wow this is really starting to seam do-able now, big thanks:proud:

Hehe thats okay! Hopefully some other members will chip in with any bits of information I may have missed out on!

Re: Womeries and feeding axolotl. Im new!

I agree with scooty that keeping worms in a tub is very easy and i havent found them smelly at all. Just chuck some food waste in every so often and they seem to multiply quite rapidly faster than my axie can eat them so you shouldnt have to get more. I also feed mine axolotl pellets which are easy to find if you search for them on the net.

Re: Womeries and feeding axolotl. Im new!

Frozen earthworms will turn into an earthworm goo/jello. It's definitely not advisable to freeze them.

And daphnia will only be an appropriate size food for a short while when your axies are tiny. They're fine to have in the adult tank; they won't cause any harm. But they won't be a food source for adults.

Re: Womeries and feeding axolotl. Im new!

Ha its so funny that i have to cultivate one eco system so I can feed another! I am planning to mainly feed earthworms and supplement with pellets and frozen blood worms. Is there anything else I have missed?

No Gravel!!!!!!! hehe! :p but I'm sure you already knew that! :D *thumbs up*

Re: Womeries and feeding axolotl. Im new!

Make sure you show us your awesome tank set up with your axies in it too!!

Re: Womeries and feeding axolotl. Im new!

Be aware that there are different kinds of worms. If you get the big fat ones (Lumbricus terrestris), what we call nightcrawlers here in the US, those need to be refrigerated. They can be kept for weeks in the fridge. They would not do well in a wormery. If you want to keep a wormery, you need compost worms (red wigglers or European nightcrawlers). These do well at room-temperature and can eat your fruit and veggie scraps from the kitchen.

I have used frozen chopped nightcrawlers, which I froze carefully into individual pieces. It worked for me, but isn't as good as fresh. And it might not work with compost worms.

Great thats good to know about the different types of worms.

So I got the tank today, it took us 6 hours of driving to fifferent places but it was worth it and its huge! We have spent hours setting up, washing sand etc. I have another question, the tank has come with two lights, one daylight which I removed and an ultra violet. I do uinderstand that axies don't like light but it is ok to have this on now and again, I will be providing plently of dark hidy holes for them as well.

Starting cycling tomorrow!!!!
