It's winter here in New Zealand and I'm having trouble keeping the axolotl tank water at average temperature. My water heater broke and I can't really get another one so I usually boil some hot water and chuck it in there, but it's still too cold. My fish seems very stressed and it's very skinny.

Also I feed it blood worms. How often should I feed it? They say every four days but my fish has a very bad diet. It's very skinny. :(

My Axolotl needs help!

Unless the tank is getting to colder than 5degreesC then there is no need to heat the tank at all - just let the tank find a stable temp - keep it somewhere away from heating but not freezing & it should be fine.

If your axolotl is skinny you should feed it - every 4 days is too little & you should try feeding daily until the belly if the animal is as wide as its head or close to that width, then think about cutting down the food...

Try feeding earthworms they are the best source of nutrition & you can make a worm farm to keep them breeding for food.

How often do you test your water parameters & do water changes?
They need good healthy water
to have a healthy appetite.

Please post a picture of the axolotl & if possible the whole tank.

Heating an axolotl tank is rarely needed. Big temperature swings in a short amount of time is bad for axolotls. Adding hot water to warm things up does not sound appropriate to me.
Room temperature during winter should be fine.

I get where you are coming from. Without my heater the temperature fluxes heaps here. How come you can't get a new one? You could move it to a new room? I had mine in the lounge with the heatpump up so he would stay at a constant temperature till I got my new heater.

As long as the water temperature is not fluctuating to much then like nikki said anything higher then 5 is fine. And its normal for the water to get cooler at night and warmer inthe day, by you adding the warm water it probably fluctuates quite a bit everyday.

What is the temperature of the water using no heater or anything?

I have the same trouble. its really cold here and i am starting to worry about my axie. I am thinking of heating the water a bit..

Mine went down to 10 degrees in the back half of my garage over the winter and were still eating well. The water was rather cold for me when doing water changes though!

I have insulation around the back, sides and base of my (130) litre tank. This really helps to stop wild swings in temperature (works in summer, too). I did have background heating in the room too, to keep it frost free.

Hope there is something in there to help! :)
