Hi im just wondering if a male an a female axie will breed all the time if there in the same tank.I have a proven female an a proven male in the same tank my male is smaller than my female so i have a divider to keep the apart but they keep getting passed it. When i came back from the hospital today they were together an now i have spermatophores all over the tank:eek: i have put them back to there sides an got up all of the spermatophores but i know she might have alread picked some up an i might have eggs soon which i am prepared for.

My question is will they have to be kept apart to stop them breeding as i dont want to be breeding them or will they be ok an only breed at a certain time any help would be great

Usually they are a seasonal breeder meaning they will breed at certain times of the year useually in the cooler seasons of the year.

But not for all, my axolotls have bread twice in almost 3 years but some peoples breed through out the year.

that is what i have learn't but i am no expert.

Thanks for replying
Im not wanting to breed them as i dont have the time to look after eggs an been in a one bed flat my space is limited i also dont want to put my female under the stress of breeding all the time an end up losing her . For now shall keep i eye on them an if she is laying eggs to often then i shall have to rehome my male :(

As well as axolotls do by them selves i like them to have a friend. Because imagin being stuck in a glass box by your self for your entire life. But thats my own opinion.

some people like to keep their axolotls by them selves.

So maybe it would be a good idea to rehomeyour male. and maybe even get another as a friend for your current female. :D

As above theoretically it should be a couple of times a year.
I have a female who tends to lay every 4 weeks!!!

I'd leave them together and see what happens.

If it occurs too often then yes split them, if not they'll be fine.
There are always people willing to raise the babies or you could leave them in the tank, they'll be eaten.

Is it stressful for the female to be laying eggs so often?

Yes. It takes an extreme amount of resources for a female to develop eggs, and allowing one to breed too frequently can significantly reduce her lifespan.

Agreed.
Fred bred every month for a few months then stopped for about 9 months then started again. If she continues i will probably have to give her away :(
