I had this thought when I was buying my water test kit, as I'm getting very close to having my axies. I saw that the site I was buying it (and many other deals that took all of my money) from also had plants. However, I'm not going to be moved into the place where I will have them for while, and didn't buy any plants for fear of accidentally killing them.

So while I'm going to wait a bit before I get them, how long would the plants survive in de-chlorinated water with nothing else in it?

As long as they're provided with a little light, they would be perfectly fine for a long time (indefinitely if they're low light plants). What kind of plants did you order? I would only see problem with high light/nutrient dependent plants (which wouldn't do well in an axolotl tank anyway). Most low light tolerant plants seem to do well even in nutrient poor water. I've had java moss grow in bucket with just dim window light and it stayed perfectly healthy for 4+ months (I eventually removed it to use in a tank).

Because I wasn't sure if they'd make it at that time, I didn't actually get any. I was thinking about hornwart, anubias of some kind, and java moss.
