Will gills grow back?

I was given 2 adult axies. They were very under weight. Also they didn't have the fluffy pieces on their gills. They have since put on heaps of weight but the gills aren't growing back. Would they normally grow back or not? They look a bit naked without them.

The gills will grow back, it tends to just take a while, usually a couple of months. The fact that they're putting on weight is a good sign. It might take your axies a bit longer to grow back their gills, as they need to get their health back first. As long as their health keeps steadily improving, they'll should fine.

Thanks for that Rita. It was toss and go for a while. But they are now full of life. I am please that I took them and gave them a chance.

Where is says "Preview/Post message" there should be a button directly right of that that says "Upload Attachment".

If you click that it will give you a pop-up.

On the pop-up click 'Browse' and find your pictures from your computer, then select them.

Finally click "Upload" on the pop-up and then "Preview/Post Message" as normal.

If the pictures aren't on your pc you need a scanner to scan them onto your computer.

Ok here are the pictures of the axies I nursed back to health. The male is the gold and the other is female.

Aww!! How cute!! They both look great, so ur obviously doing a good job.
Ur male looks like one of my boys. So cool.

Hi Rita. I have noticed the gills are growing. And yes they are cute. They now have a new lease of life. These guys are so full of energy now. It is great. They swim heaps. The gold often walks on his back legs. As soon as I put my hand in the tank they come on over thinking I have food. I have now stopped stressing and just go with the flow. Is yours an active one? And Rita it is comments like yours (and other peoples) that keep this world a happy place. Thank you.

Is which of mine active?? I have 5!! lols. But they're all pretty active at the moment, though this is probably only because they have feeder-fish in the tank, which they're all trying to hunt.(rather amusing to watch, trust me!!)

hi
i have just got a new axolotl about 2 weeks ago.
so now i have 2. they both seemed to get along but just today my old axie must have bitten of the hole of one of his legs. Will he be ok or should i put him in a different tank? the tank is big enough for both of them and they have places to hide. the tank is 75cm long. both axies are 16 and 17cm long.

elissa - If the aggression continues you may want to separate them or put in a tank divider. Not all axolotls will share their space.

If the wound is bad I would remove the axolotl and keep him in a light salt solution (1 teaspoon salt per 2 liters of water) until it has healed over. Or keep in him fresh water and give him salt baths for a few days. Salt bath solution is 2 teaspoons of salt mixed in 2 liters of water, soak axolotl for 10 min twice a day.

Keep its water clean and cool.

Keep an eye on the wound for fungus and infection.

I found that wounds are quickly healed with a treatment of Melafix, and fungus free.

thank you for your help.
Since the leg incident, i left them over night in the same tank and the older one shadow has now bitten off some of sunny's tail. i have put sunny in a different tank but only big enough for the size he is now. Will they ever get along or do they always have to be separated?

it´s normal they are establishing their place in the tank, they tend to be very territorial, once his leg is healed try to put him there again , but don´t rush yourself let it heal right.

Elissa, when Sunny's wounds have healed you could try taking Shadow out of the main tank & put him in a holding tank/crate & place Sunny in the main tank...give him a chance to establish his place...then put Shadow back in with him. Providing them both with places to go into & separate feeding dishes in their chosen area within the tank might help to prevent aggression occuring.

i agree with Ros. when my female was aggressive with my male i left the male in the main tank then a couple of months later (when she stopped laying eggs every time i put her back in the main tank) i put her back in and they get along great now. the male sometimes snaps at my female now when she gets on his nerves.lol.but they great now
