This photo was taken only a couple of hours after the netting of these newts from a rice paddy on Uke Island:

One can clearly see shrimp and what appear to be frog (?) eggs. Also a "normal" stool to the right of the tail of the newt in the center of the sort that results from a diet of worms.

Anyway, it's some indication of what these newts eat in the wild

Actually, quite fascinating. Do you suppose those could be their own eggs, or were frogs eggs that size very abundant there?

These shrimp were very abundant in the rice paddy (the only paddy left on the whole island), though I didn't take a shot of any live ones.

Jen, yep, I suppose those could be ensicauda eggs. I don't know enough about frog eggs to even speculate. I didn't see any frog eggs, though it wouldn't surprise me if they were there (there were certainly lots of frogs about!).
