Why Substrate??

I have read and heard so many stories of loltl's swallowing substrates of all kinds and getting sick or dying. So what purpose does substrate serve other than making your loltl sick?
I'm totally convinced not to use substrate in any of my tanks.

Substrate provides a large surface area for beneficial bacteria to colonise, it provides texture for axie feet to grip and find traction, and it enhances the look of a tank. But it is not absolutely necessary.

Thank you aunty that's quite a good answer.
Enhancing the look of the tank doesn't bother me though. As long as things are practical and serve's a good purpose. I'd still be hard pressed to use substrate tho'.
