Why are my bubbles so big?

I've had the same bubbler for several months now along with all the same sponge filter and air stone. Same set up, same location, literally nothing has changed. Today I did a water change and turned off the bubbler during that time to clean the sponge filter. When I put it back in after cleaning (I did not take it apart during cleaning) the bubbles are WAY bigger than they were previously. I tried taking the filter apart to see if the air stone had been moved around but everything is the same. What happened, why, and most importantly how do I fix it? Because these loud bubbles are going to drive me crazy

if the bubbles are larger then when you have previously cleaned the sponge then the air-stone could be deteriorated and need replacing.

I've also encountered a similar issue when I accidentally twisted the different sections out of alignment a bit and didn't even realize. It constructed the air flow and created giant LOUD bubbles like you have. I just hold it under water so I can see the bubbles and fiddle with it until it looks right again.
