Why are Axolotls Illegal in California???

Can somebody tell me why it's illegal to have Axolotls in California? I used to have some about 10 or 12 years ago and they were really cool. I recently felt the urge to get a new aquarium and some axolotls again, but apparently the Soup Nazi regulators here have made them illegal in the intervening period. For goodness sakes, why?
I swear, this place really cramps my style. Time to move maybe.

I assume that Axolotl are illegal in California because the authorities there are afraid that they could get into the local lakes. This may cause some severe problems because they do not have any natural predators. Axolotl are aliens in californian nature and may cause some harm to local fauna, i.e. fish, frogs and other amphibians.
