what a cool hobby we have!
anywho did i not here salamanders may enjoy being pet in the neck region?...
granted, I (we) realize they are toxic and i will not touch my eyes afterwards but does any one know if they enjoy stimulation? ..as my dog becomes more jealous..

...and it would depress their immune defense and you would transfer germs over their skin.

this is serious stuff Brian, give out all the info you can and leave them be untill you know more. How much water, what kind of sal do you have and what are you feeding it?

No worries Jeff. I have owned my tiger salamanders for around 3 months now and touched them maybe twice. they eat the crickets i give them and our in very good hands..no pun intended(lol) anyway what difference does it make what species they are since you arent supposed to touch any of them anyway. i posted my query because i thought i read that strange fact somewhere and wanted to know if someone else had too. i enjoy them very much and will not be mistreating them anytime soon. and if i did no one would hear their screams...once again im joking..

I have heard before "not to touch any of them", but I don't think this is really true. Granted you have to be very carefull and your hands have to be washed, but I need to handle mine all the time, cleaning, feeding, and so forth. I used to have to pick up my Taricha and move him to the food before it got washed away by the current. Or move him to the area where I could tweezer feed him. Also, I could actually hold him slighty as he attacked his food underwater right when I first brought him too it, he didn't even care. But I think some species are more delicate to being handled then others.

ya i used to have a california newt years ago in new jersey . now i live in san diego and cannot find them anywhere. i have a firebelly newt and would love having another cali newt but i understand it is a protected species here. ie. it cannot be sold i believe. not sure of the rules but think its weird you cannot have a cali newt in cali! i would also love to get a marbled newt but, common only in europe, i have seen them advertised here for $75 each. a little pricey for me. i too will feed my tiger sally's w/ tweezers mostly, and will also use them to remove substrate from their mouths if they grabbed it along w/ the cricket. talk to ya later...
