ahhh, springtime in Alaska...days are now almost 20 hours long, the landscape is still covered in snow but the days are mild and the nights are crisp and clear.

No herps around here, but from my kitchen window I can see ptarmigan, snowshoe hares, muskoxen on the hills, reindeer on the mountain slopes, and there's a moose mama and calf behind my house and a fox visits every night to eat the moose nuggets. Bears will wake up soon.

My dog and I roam the hills on skis every night. The land is like an empty bathtub: snowy slopes in all directions, all ours to make tracks in and explore. Can't sleep much and sure as heck can't think or concentrate at work. End of semester - it takes double the effort to get anything done. Wanna be outside all the time. Soon, it'll be melting and my dog and I will go catch mosquito larvae in the beaver pond for the newt folks. :p

This summer, we want to go "herping" to look for wood frogs, our only interior Alaskan herp. It hasn't been seen near the coast where we live, but it may be further inland where the tundra gives way to boreal forest. My dog and I will take our kayak down there and paddle and camp and catch fish and look for frogs.

uh oh...reality check.... must stop daydreaming and get back to work....

You live in such a beautiful place Molch! I've always wanted to go up north to see the aurora borealis! :blob:

It sure looks wonderful outside in that peacefull landscape! Wish i could live more like that instead of my ugly willage, were people not even can talk clear=) or be silent.

A friend of mine went out on a small tripp yesterday, to a large kind a famous frog breading pond . So i got some pictures, and yes, it's spring alright.

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
