Hey guys,

Just wondering, I have noticed a strange white growth on the suction cups of my filter. Its weird because it only seems to be on the suction cups and nowhere else!!
Any ideas? I haven't removed it because i thought it may be "good" growth??

Cheers

Paul

I've noticed a white film on the suction cups in my tank, is this what you see? I think it's just a build up of the good bacteria (I hope). I don't think it's anything to worry about.

I would pull them out and replace them, just to be safe. Black suction cups, which are made out of Buna-N (nitrile), are safest. This could be harmless growth of some sort, or it could be fungus growing off of a coating of bacteria on the cups. The clear cups often supplied with pumps and filters are notorious for this. It is usually a sign of complete suction cup failure in the near furture in my experience.

there is alwats a white gooey builld up on the suction cups in my fish tanks and some parts inside the filter... i just scrape it off.

The white buildup in my tanks is limescale coming as the (hard) water evaporates. In itself it is not slimy, but it provides plenty of microsurface for bacteria, which make it feel slimy. It also builds up on the spray bars as well as in a ring arond the tank. I scrub the ring away when I do water changes but I clean the suction cups and spray bars much less often, so that the buildup there is much heavier. I clean the spray bars and suction cups maybe three, two times a year by soaking them in a descaler and rinsing, rinsing, rinsing before putting them back in the tank.
