Im not sure if mine are a taricha torosa or granulosa. I caught a bunch up in the mountains when i was in a boy scout camp. They were within 40 feet from a river, but were walking around on land. I need to know what kind of habitat should i put them in semi aquatic? terrestrial? or do both species need different habitats. hopefully someone can help me

I found them here

In CA the law require a fishing license to keep native amphibians/herps. You are limited to 4(not sure if this is per species or total). I would reccomend taking any others back to release them. Look at the caudata culture caresheet(also has indentification tips though I don't think you are going to need to pry open the mouth of your Taricha to find out) for more info if you plan to keep them long term. I think you should be able to tell by range but I do not know much about Taricha.

Amazing my city registers on that map...thought we weren't prominent enough.

Hopefully someone with actual experience on Taricha will comment and add in their experience.

They would be T. torosa. T. granulosa's range ends somewhere around Santa Cruz, I believe.

If the brown part of their skin extends below the eye, then you've got granulosa. If it's above the eye (as in the orange part comes above the eye,) then it's torosa. That's how I tell anyway...I hope I'm right.
