can any body tell where (like lakes or something) to
find red eft and eastern newts and what time of the year.

Most people on this forum frown seriously on giving locality data. Most of the time this is because people are only looking to mass collect for a profit. If you're seriously seeking newts for observation (and hopefully not collection, but if so, be sure to check your local laws), then I would go out and get a good field guide (I recommend Conant and Collins' Reptiles and Amphibs of East/Central North America), and find suitable habitat and use some good ol' leg work to find them.

Also, you won't find efts near lakes, as they're terrestrial.

I agree with Joan. Some states actually have their own field guides as well. Why are you looking for this particular newt?
The red eft is a spectacular specimen to see in the wild and actually come across. It is not very easy to keep in captivity unless one has some experience keeping small terrestrial salamanders.

Notophthalmus are legal to collect in NC, I think the limit is 5 or 6. The best place to look for them this time of year is under debris next to the drying sidewater pools of stream bottoms. I probably saw 30 yesterday in this type of habitat just casually looking. I too recommend getting a copy of Conant's eastern field guide and printing a copy of the NC rules off their DNR website.

I may be able to help. Spring and early summer they come out when its warm and moist..in the woods where theres mossy rocks and logs, stumps etc. they are quite bright orange around here. I have counted them in the hundreds on several occasions while walking in the woods. NH has almost no topsoil so there is a lot of moisture at the surface of the land which I assume is why the salamanders do so well here.
