I am wanting to raise a waterdog into a tiger salamander. All of the pet stores and local bait shops do not sell them. I live in Alabama is it possible for me to catch one , if not where should i buy one.

We don't advocate bait or pet shop purchases of wild caught animals. We also do not allow want/sale ads for wild caught animals.

If you live in an area where tigers can be found, it's possible to collect your own. In Alabama, I believe you need a fishing license to collect caudates.

Alabama Waterdogs are endangered due to a dwindling population. I live in Mississippi pretty close to the Alabama state line. I tried to find one last year, and everywhere I checked said that they are now endangered. I don't remember the specifics but I believe it's supposed to be due to over harvesting as a lot of people in our area have been using them for fish bait for years... Go to EDGE of Existence :: Evolutionarily Distinct & Globally Endangered for more info. Sorry I can't seem to post the link.

I'm sure there are other species that are similar but thought you'd like to know about this. Some people have been selling them as "rare" in our area despite it being illegal.

Here's where the confusion with common names comes into play. "Alabama waterdog" actually refers to the mudpuppy, not tiger salamanders. In addition, as far as I know, only the Black Warrior mudpuppy is protected. It's range is highly localized and is unlikely to be confused with any other mudpuppy (Necturus) or waterdog (tiger salamander) in the state.

hey isnt the mudpuppy's scientific name Necturus maculosus or something like that...i wanted one but couldnt find any so i got a paddletail
