Hey quick question,I have a red eft thats 2 inches and I'am wondering how many inches it has to be to turn aquatic?I also have 2 marbled newts and I'am also wondering how many inches they have to be to turn auatic? My marbled newts are 3 inches.

Notophthalmus viridescens can stay in the red eft stage for 3-8 years in the wild. I am not familiar with the life history of marbled newts.

Your red eft will actually turn green. I have found them roaming the woods basicly full grown and green. All they were missing was the flattened tails.

Some people keep their green mable newts aquatic the entire life cycle. You should look up some old threads on the subject. You could try changing them over yourself by keeping them in an inch of water with some live plants like Anacharis and a small cork island. Just large enough for them to fit on. No extra room. You want to force them the explore their watery surroundings.

I believe your marbled newts are this year's babies, right? They would not even be a year old then. I'd say that's much too early. If they are happy and eating now, I wouldn't change a thing and would wait at least another year or until they show signs of sexual maturity to put them in water.

If you try this prematurely, you're just running the risk of drowning them, with no benefit at all.

You will certainly know for sure when you efts turn to adults... They turn olive green with the orange spots and small black dots. Don't worry, you will know when they become adults, they turn olive green and they stay efts for about 3-7 years... :) when they come adults, just make the setup like the fire belly newt's setup, 1/4 land and the rest 3 inches of water ;)
