When do axies breed. Is there a breeding season or do they mate whenever. Also if you have a male and female will they almost always mate or just hang out if you know what i mean.

They usually breed when there is a male and a female together. For the most part, they seem unphased by season.

Not always will a male and a female breed. Some people will have them breed within days of introduction, and others have had theirs together for years with no breeding.

Thanks Kaysie. I havnt had any eggs but i hope i get some.

Most of my axolotls spawn on command. I just give them extra worms and if it's summer I put frozen water bottles all over the surface to cool it down a bit.

My male decided to ... get randy... the first time he was introduced to a female, and then again every time I changed around the interior decor of the tank :) Hope that helps!

Ours spawned through temperature change, warm to sudden cold spell then back to warm.

Jacob, our breeding friends use similar method for their axolotls, we're hoping his goldens will spawn soon as golden juveniles are very expensive here (NZ$40-NZ$50/approx US$20-US$25).

I want to add at least one golden albino to our menagerie so having a local breeder will save on shipping costs.

Thanks guys. No eggs yet. Perhaps Beau isn't a girl but she has a small cloaca and a round belly. Shifter's cloaca's a big bigger now then it was the other day so i he is a boy. His belly isn't round at all. Its straight. I'll try a temperature change but i don't know how seeing as its winter so the waters cold and i have frozen bottles so i don't think i'll make a big difference. By the way Kapo my two are goldens but i'm not local to you but if i were i'd give babies to you for free :D

Be careful- I wouldn't recommend sudden temp changes at all. They are very stressful on our little friends!

Ziggy, it's only when the temperature fluctuates repeatedly that it is stressful. Caudates (and all animals) will occasionally experience sudden temperature changes in the wild. Using ice bottles to cool the tank to induce breeding is not dangerous.

Good luck with the breeding Jay. I would love some baby Golds, unfortunately i don't know anybody in UK that has any near me :(.

Sorry there Kaysie- I get nervous for inexperienced breeders sometimes. I'm sure jay_coward (hello, by the way ::smiles::) has the intention of researching before taking any action (or rather, letting the axolotls do so, haha). I just didn't want anyone to think it was a great idea to keep changing the water temp around repeatedly, trying to force breeding. And even in one temp change, it depends how drastic a change it is before anyone can assign stress (I've seen temp changes do quite a bit of damage). You are completely right though, that ice bottles in water is fine and dandy, but like defensive driving and preventative medicine, I just wanted to keep the little'uns safe through the basics and then move forward. I'm sure you understand. And jay, kudos on having a nice cold tank as the norm ;)

Thanks Ziggy. I havn't done anything yet. I'm waiting to see if they'll do it themselves. It was Shifters B'day yesterday. so he's 1 1/2 years old. I got him a ping pong ball. He is ignoring me though today and i don't know why. Oh well.

If the tank temps are already low, then separating the pair for a while and introducing them to each other again may help give them the extra nudge. I'm not saying to force them to breed, but if they are healthy then it isn't such a bad thing. Don't let them spawn too many times per year though because that is hard on the female's body. I keep several dozen females, so the most spawnings they have per year is two..if that.

I don't change the water temp drastically, I lower it by 5 or 10 degrees farenheit.

While i was changing the water today i moved the set-up around. While i was moving them the tank got warm from my arm so now ive done the rapidly cooling water thing. They aren't even sitting near each other at the moment. Can't wait to see how things go.

Nothing yet. I hope they are boy and girl. I know shifters a boy anyway

Are you sure both are sexually mature that could be your problem.

shifter just turned 18 months old and beau has real dark nails
