Hello,

I wonder when I could sex my newts. Let me explain : they were bought in a pet shop a month ago , Is there a way to find out the age at this moment? Maybe by the length  ? I have no idea about this, and I want to find out the age "today" to know the month/year when I will see them like an adults newts.

Now, they length about 10 centimetres. If there isn't a way...I will wait.

I'm going to put some photos, bad photos...but It's what I have now on my computer.

Thanks

If you bought the in a pet shop, and they are around 10cm they are adults. Age is therefore impossible to know.
With that size they obviously are sexually mature, so you can sex them no problem.
Look at their cloacas. If the cloaca is broad, and swollen, it´s a male. If it´s small, and narrower, it´s female. There´s usually a difference in tail length, females having longer and narrower tails, usually ending in an angle, while males have broader, shorter, and rounder tails.
Take a look at this caresheet http://www.caudata.org/cc/species/Cynops/C_orientalis.shtml, it has information on sexing them(as well as great care info).
If you have trouble trying to see the differences, just upload some picstures of their cloacas here, and we will gladly help you sex them. It´s usually quite easy.

By the way, the animal in the second picture could be female, a bit hard to tell though.

I dont think your newt is at a maturity that can easily tell which gender it is. My captive breed at around year 3 became very easy to distinguish. However, I think the maturity and the sexual characteristic are also dependence on various attributes, such as amount of food intake....etc

Thanks azhael, you are being the guardian angel of my newts

I have seen a sheet talking about the differences between male/female but I'm still confused and I think they are young. Anyway, I'll take some closer photos on weekend, while I clean the aquarium, to put them here for the experts  .

Well, Here are the photos. It was a bit difficult to take them because they didn't stop moving. Now, I think they both are female. What's your opinion?

Thanks for helping me !

How long is it?
By the look of it, it does not look like a breeding male. However, it might still just too young to tell.
Breeding Male should have a board tail and swell up cloaca, while the female should have a sword like thin tail.

They both look like females to me. Unless they are too young, i would say they are definitely female, time will tell though.

From what I've seen, the male orientalis usually have more of a notch (indentation) in the underside of the tail just behind the cloaca. So I would also guess 2 females, but it's just a guess.

Thanks all !!

Maybe It's soon, Time will show the truth. I have them since September and they have just begun putting on weight (newt 1 was quite skinny), I'll wait for several months (years?) until they grow a bit more.

They should probably be mature enough to tell it gender within one year. It won't take several years for sure, unless something is really wrong. :)
