Hey all! Last week my eggs hatched, I have noticed about 6 babies in particular that look odd, at first I thought it might have just been left over jelly stuck to them but it's not. Under their bellies they have something transparent stuck to them, it's a part of them, from under the mouth to the back it's very noticeable, they are eating fine and swimming but tend to lay on their sides, I am attaching a picture, I hope you can see what I'm talking about. It almost looks like a transparent belly under their normal belly.

Thats looks like the remnants of their yolk sac - it will disappear as they grow. They sometimes lay on their side until they get legs for stability - thats normal as long as they can swimm straight.

Hi, I'm back again, babies are now roughly 15 days old, I did a more thorough check with my water changes last night and separated the ones that looked like these from the rest, there is actually about 12 like this, most if not all are not eating, they are growing at a super slow rate compared to the others and most are very weak, I doubt any of them will actually make it at this rate. If it's the yolk sac remnants when should that disappear? I thought it would have by now? No? Thanx for any further insight you can provide!

Oh and if it helps only wild type and albino are affected by whatever this is.

What are you feeding them? If you're feeding BBS you can see when they've eaten by the orange-ness of their fat bellies. If you're feeding daphnia you may not see their full bellies.

If they are not eating there could be several reasons - water quality, not enough food, deformity, or the very sad but terribly true just-was-never-going-to-make-it.

I am just separating mine at 3 - 4 weeks into size groups, some are much bigger or smaller than their siblings, and natural variation is normal. But I had the same issue at about the same time - half of mine died overnight for no apparent reason. I put it down to some kind of contamination (or just nature being a b!tch) as the smallest ones were affected worst.
