1. Nobody is going to type out for you all the signs of sick newts. There are many! Are you observing something that could be sickness?

2. Usually springtime. But if you just obtained the newts, it's likely to take a year or more until they breed.

Are you positive you have japanese firebellied newts? These are not very popular in the pet trade any more. I'd be inclined to say they're either chinese firebellied newts (Cynops orientalis) or some type of 'warty' newt. www.caudata.org/cc read the caresheets on each to decide what you have.

'the brown ones' is pretty unspecific. Can you tell us how big they are, or take close up pictures?
