If I wanted to have a community tank of newts and salamanders what would be a good species suited

If you are talking about mixing species it is not advised. It is especially a bad idea considering newts pretty much are called newts because they are salamanders which are semi aquatic at least sometime in their life time where as for a salamander you are looking at a terrestrial set up where there is no deep water where they can drown. This is also why newts and salamanders should not be mixed and to be honest I wouldn't even put different species of newt together or different species of salamander together never mind newt/salamander assuming that's what you meant.

I agree. Mixing species is a recipe for disaster. They may live together in the wild, but there is constant competition and much larger spaces. They may not just attack one another, but the toxins that they carry may harm one another.

Apologies I meant a single species set up. Consisting of at least five individuals.

In general terms, i would say that the ideal species is Pleurodeles waltl. Depending on the conditions that can be offered, level of experience, and other variables, there are plenty of other species which are excellent choices, like any Triturus, Cynops pyrrhogaster and C.ensicauda, Hypselotriton cyanurus/chenggongensis, Tylototriton verrucosus, etc.

Beginner asking for advice

Hi wondering if anyone can help. I did keep some newts before and want to get back in hobby and look at some research opportunities.
Either thinking of looking at keeping a small group of solitary species preferably a terrestrial species.
Or keeping a group setup of a single species.
Advice what species would anyone recommend for a beginner that would meet one of these requirements

Re: Beginner asking for advice

The best thing you can do is research this yourself. It is a very hard question to expect an answer too as we have no idea of what you can actually provide. Have a look through this site :- Caudata Culture Home Page
Then look through the various sections on here to gain more insight. All the information is here, you just need to read it :D

Species question

Are alpine newts or created newts a good beginner species

Thanks, have been using that website and found it very helpful. well I have two to three foot tank waiting for some critters. Would like to keep a species that can be kept solitary and gradually integrated together. Like the looks of alpine newts, crested newts, mandarin salamanders or fire salamanders

I was looking at Italian alpine newts or a number of different crested species. Do you know how many Italian alpine newts can you keep together

I wouldn't recommend mixing crested or alpine species/sub-species.
I wouldn't advise keeping more than 2 males in a tank unless its a male only tank.
you can keep a maximum of 4 alpines in a 5gal tank and about 6-7 in a 10gal.
If you have any more questions feel free to ask.
Sam

Thanks I would either be keeping one or the other thanks for your help
