Hope this is in the right place to post this...

Anyways,
Ive been looking into making a Paludarium for Chinese Fire Bellied Newts and after some research and advice from my other thread, I learned its best to get captive bred ones. I also was told that my house runs a bit too warm for them so I want to look at alternatives. I wont be getting pet store newts so I figure this expands my choices a bit.

Being incredibly new to newts/salamanders, I would appreciate some suggestions of different animals to look at.

Some notes:

-My tank is a 30 gallon long, and will utilize 15-20 gallons with the set up i have in mind. I am willing to change the set up to suit the inhabitant, but I do want it to be primarily aquatic since its what I know.

-My coldwater tanks are 68-70 degrees year round with my water being fairly hard.

-I would like something cheaper, $20 or under would be nice. Readily available would be good too, as well as being hardy. Im new at this :p

-No axolotls please, I adore them but they are illegal in California, where I am.

-A few animals would be nice, but I would love to have one larger inhabitant as well, so different sized ones would be appreciated?

Hope thats all thats needed, thank you for reading!

Hi, it's nice to see you're thinking everything through and not just buying animals and then finding out what they need.

Regarding the sizes you mention towards the end, I'm not sure if you mean you'd like different species - if that's what you're asking, then generally mixing newts with anything else, or other species of newts, is not recommended. There are various issues like toxicity, competition for food, aggression etc. The only combination which seems safe is having some shrimps with newts. I'd recommend reading these articles - I'm sure they'll answer a lot of questions.
Some species to look at would be Cynops ensicauda, cyanurus or pyrrhogaster, Tylotriton verrucosus and Pleurodeles waltl. You can find their caresheets here.

Being into fishkeeping has told me research is your friend, trial and error and all that :p

Oh I'm sorry, I wasnt looking for mixed species in my last post, more of like having 4 of the same newt, like a colony I suppose? I'm not sure of the term for it. Anyways, this will be a species only tank.

Thank you for the suggestions, I'll look into them!
