Hey everyone so I'm thinking about making a 3d background wall for my tanks. I found heaps of tutorials on how to do it, but I need to double check on what paints are safe for axolotls.

If anyone has used paints for things in their tanks before please let me know what types or brands etc. Thanks! :D

I've been down this road.

I'm not sure there are (m)any materials inc paints that are safe and won't leach anything that axies may absorb.

There are two "pond sealants" that I'm aware of that seem to be a way of making anything safe - in the UK they are G4 and Blagdon V8 (from memory).

However - G4 at least (my only specific experience) is designed for porous surfaces like concrete - worked for me on a painted grout surface (which may be the technique you are looking at) but may not be so keen on other surfaces.

... and it stinks, so takes a while before you'd be willing to put it in any tank.

[your mileage may vary]

We have covered this topic numerous times here in the forums. Use of the search function will provide many answers.

Additionally, there are a number of build threads that discuss this that can be most easily accessed through the vivaria section of Caudata Culture.

I have searched and read, but I was looking for more answers and to have a conversation about it seems how there might be someone that has done what I'm wanting to do, a 3d background. I'm looking for some help from people that may of painted something similar to what I'm wanting to paint and I haven't found that yet on here. I'm starting to think about just making a real 3d background using slate or rocks instead of making something fake.
