I'd like to collect some cooler branches for my axolotl tanks but I'm not sure what to do with found wood. Do I need to dry it or treat it or stick it in my outside pond or something? I assume oak isn't good for them, but what about cypress or pine or whatever?

Try buying some mopani wood, it works alot better. All you have to do is let it sit in a tub of water and let it bleach out (change the water until it clears). I'm setting up another aquarium right now and i'm using mopani as a background, based of a friends magazine.

Hardwoods like cypress are generally OK. Soft sappy woods like pine are generally not. It's best to use wood that has already been soaked (outdoors) for a long time.
