I got this as an extra when I went out to get some woodlice...they just sat there amongst the woodlice under the wood.

I wonder what kind of larvae this is?

They look alike some kind of worm you can find here. I´ve always doubted between them being some fly species larvae or a moth larvae. I think they are a moth larvae since when you find lots of these under ground there usually is an explosive bloom of thousands of moths later. But they kind of look like fly larvae...so i´m confused hehe...

caterpillars always have a clear head unlike these Tipulidae larvae.
It is also not a worm.
But you were close with the fly larvae, they are crane fly larvae (which is a mosquito and not a fly)

Oh, i know they are not worms...it´s just the way everyone calls them here. I hadn´t considered Tipulidae but you are right! i can´t believe i didn´t even think about the chance of them being tipulidae...my arthropods teacher would be ashamed....

grunsven- I'm not sure what you mean about caterpillars always having a clear head. Do you mean clear as in see-through or obvious? All the caterpillars I've raised (which is a lot, for that is my main hobby) have obvious and colored heads.

Im just curious as to what you mean.

I'm pretty sure he meant 'clear' as in 'obvious' :)

All my (somewhat larger) newts seem to love this larvae, thanks for the response!

I mean they clearly have a head with a chitin "skull" unlike fly and mosquito larvae which do not have this.
