people have asked me what colour my axie is and Im not sure what to tell them. What colour would you consider this guy is?

To me he looks like a leucistic type, based on the colouring on the legs and belly, but I could be worng...

But his coloring looks a bit greenish. What about a light colored wildtype?

I also considered that, but I assumed that he might just be really "freckled". I've just seen leucistic with colouration like this before.

Hi Nattles,

What a beautiful exotic looking axolotl. I have never seen one like this before, especially the almost fluorescent pink gill fimbriae.

I agree with the general idea. I would think its a highly pigmented leucistic, but a light coloured wild type is possible. I am still more inclined towards leucistic though. Wildtypes would tend to have a even colour distribution throughout its entire body including the limbs, lateral and ventral aspects.

Leucistics on the other hand, tend to have pigments on the dorsum and head region. The genetics of them are discussed in another thread if you are interested why they can have colouration.

Regards. :ufo:

Hi Nattles,

I'll put my vote on your lovey being a leucistic and a beautiful one too. I think it's quite rare for them to have dark pigmentation going all the way down the back - lucky you! ;)

Nattles88: Hello, your axie is beautiful. I don´t know what color it is, but I think it is very similar to the color of axolotl from this video.

Ha ha I've seen those videos before... (don't judge me... I work a night job lol).

gosh i feel so special. I got him from a bloke in the the next town, he's an older bloke whos been breeding them for years, I wonder if he knows what a unique colour hes managed to pick up?
I wonder what the babies would turn out like if he/she ever had babies with my wildtype?

I agree this is a heavily pigmented leucistic. I've got one which is nearly as dark. I've not found any sensible opinion as to why some are so dark and most are a lot paler, the genetics of minor modifying factors does not seem to be sorted. Mine is still getting darker so you may get a very deeply pigmented and unusual axie as it gets older.

If you cross it with a wildtype it depends on if the wildtype carries the leucistic gene. If it does half the offspring will be leucistic and half wildtype. If it does not all will be wild type in appearance but all will carry the leucistic gene and half their offspring will be leucistic if crossed with a leucistic. I can't guess if offspring will be equally darkly marked, I suspect most will not, but a few might.

Other variants may appear in the offspring as both parents may carry other recessive genes such as melanoid or albino.

Yes I agree, the odds are most of the offspring will turn out cmpletely wild type, and the rest will be leucistic. Now you may get lucky and one, or a couple, may have similar pigmentation, but thats generally up to chance.
