I rescued this newt from someone who caught him :(

He looks to me like a Japanese Fire Belly but he was caught in North America... any ideas?

That was definitely not caught in North America. It looks to me like some type of Cynops. Maybe it is a Japanese firebelly.

Wow I was right?? Woohoo! =) Thank you!

Ok I gotta know, if it was caught in the US then what state was it found in. It is definitely a release.

Good question Justin! I just emailed the person I got him from to find out... either he was released or I misunderstood her I guess. Maybe the toad he came with was wild caught... but I was pretty sure she said she caught them together... and I'm pretty sure the toad is an American Toad. (I separated them as soon as I got them but she had them together) I'll let you know as soon as I hear back from her.

Would it be ok to get him a friend? He's in a ten gallon all alone. Would he be happier or more stressed? He's been captive for at least 4 months and he's still fat and hungry and seems very healthy.

Newts do fine on their own, but if you wanted to get him a friend than that would probably be fine.

AH HA! The person I got him from did NOT catch him... I misunderstood! She caught the toad and put him in with the newt (which doesn't seem like a good idea to me...) but the newt she got from someone else. No wonder I was so confused!!!

very bad idea keeping anurans with caudates, tends to end up with a very full dead frog/toad , and unless its eaten a taricha... a very dead newt too,
these are quite aggressive newts...not big on "friends", so unless you want to breed them , dont worry about it being lonely ... it actually prefers it that way!

The problem with getting it a "friend" is that it's next to impossible to find Japanese firebellies for sale any more. Pet shops sell mainly Chinese firebellies these days (though they often LABEL them as Japanese, so don't believe what they tell you). I would not recommend keeping it with any other species, even Chinese FBN. He certainly doesn't need (or benefit) from having a "friend", except for possible reproduction.

I have no advice, or information, but feel compelled ot exclaim "OMG! HE IS TOO CUTE!!!" heehee
