What fish can temporarily be housed with axolotls?

My grandpa is helping me set up a large tank for my axolotls. To make sure it's safe, he is insisting on putting a fish in there.
What is safe for the axolotl to live with or eat?
It's a 45 gallon breeder with about 30-35 gallons of water.
I had an axolotl for 4 years. This is only temporary. When I move in the next few weeks, if it's not dead, I will set the fish up in a new home.

First off, it seems a little counter-intuitive to put a fish to see if the tank is safe for an axie or not, and put your axie in with it. Will there be an initial trial period?

Otherwise, people generally do not recommend putting fish in with axies two reasons being because of certain pathogens that can be transferred and because a hungry fish can get nippy on gills. To be safe, the fish should be small enough to be eaten, there aren't any spines, and should be bred yourself. Fish from a pet store are especially notorious to be sickly and transfer whatever diseases it had to your tank.

If you really had to, your best bet would be to use guppies or mosquito fish, which are sometimes bred and used as feeder fish for axies

Good indicators are guppies and red cherry or glass shrimp- Guppies will help wonderfully with the cycling and are good hunting, but cherries are good cycling, good hunting, and a cleaning crew all in one delightful bright coloured cute package. I'd be putting in a few guppies and as many shrimp as you can- and you don't need to remove the shrimp once you're done

Oh, and NO GOLDFISH- they're bad news where axolotls are concerned!

i have a 6 inch royal pleco & a few ghost shrimp & guppies ,

i think i have too many shrimp because when i feed the axys the shrimp come fast & snatch away whatever im feeding the axys i find myself fighting them off the axy food & they are still persistent

i dont think the axys can see the shrimp since they are clear & they occasionally snatch a guppy here & there , the pleco is always posted up & the axys really dont seem to notice or care that its there ,

I also wanted to know something about other fish with axies. I dont have any with mine, but my brother is thinkin of aquiring an axie, and has a few bottom feeder catfish in his tank. i told him NO fish with them, but he was like theyre bottom feeders wouldnt that b ok. Well what does everyone think? Bottom feeders, and pleco sucker fish are they ok for axies to room with??
