Hi
My tank is covered with a jelly like substance all over the inside of the glass that isn't the sperm is it? Also how big do axies have to be before they can mate? How do you get them to mate too?

I can't recall any really good pictures of a spermatophore, unfortunately--I saw some fuzzy ones around--if you search the forums you might be able to find one.

Spermataphores are structures, though--what does the jelly look like? How many axolotls are in the tank? They probably wouldn't reach sexual maturity before 6 months at a minimum.

Can you take a picture of the jelly-like substance to show us?

pictures of the possible spermataphores would definitely help out.

A spermatophore looks like a clear cone of goo with a white blob on top. They're about 1-1.5 cm high. They disintegrate pretty quickly.

after they disentegrate, can they still fertilize the eggs?

The female needs to pick them up in order for fertilization to occur.

I know, so when the disentegrate into the water, they are no longer able to be picked up? All the traces of them are gone? Not even enough to fertelize?

There's nothing to grab. Keep in mind axolotls fertilize internally. I am not aware of any studies on the viability of the gametes in terms of time (for someone, say, who was trying to do some kind of artificial insemination).

True, well do they leave a lot around or can there just be a few?Last week there were these 3 blobs of clear gel with white tops that looked like they had fluffy mould on top.I thought they were food scraps gone bad that I'd missed so I sucked them out.Could they have been spermatophores?Or am I just a bad housemaid? lol

from what i know, those could have definitely been spermatophore. From axolotl.org : "The spermatophore is a common "device" in the salamander and newt world. It is a packet of sperm attached to the top of a cone of jelly." If that is what it looked like than that is definitely what it was.

EEK!

Apryl, if your males are dropping spermatophores, then they'll definately drop more. Just consider it a form of birth control. Unless your axolotls are catholic, then you're in trouble lol.

Haha thats pretty funny Joan. How often do they release the spermatophore?

Thanks Cynthia, those pics in the first link were great! And yep, they WERE little presents from Diablo,so I guess that means Boris is a girl...

Well,if it happens again I will be a bit less fastidious about the vaccuuming, lol
