I have a 20gal long, and currently have it filled about 3/4ths the way full with clear plastic wrap over the top incase they get frisky and try to jump, I was just wondering what everyone has over the tops of their tanks. I worry that this traps the evaporating air and keeps in the heat. Although I dont have a light on and the filters are sponge/airater powered so no heat source in the tank. Just curious, any advice or suggestions would be great. Thanks

I believe you can buy a cheap reptile screen from a petshop/aquarium or if you're a handy kind of person you could easily make one. Another thing I think that hoods keep the water a little to warm and doesn't lead to evaporation, I found it hard to maintain a temp with a hood on.

I use no tops on any of my axolotl tanks. I'm not saying I would advise it but I don't have any jumping problems. The only tanks I worry about tops on are ones where the salamanders can crawl out.

I don't have any. Luckily my cat won't like to 'play' with my axies and I've never had an axie that jumped out of the tank.
I think it's pretty easy like this. (And the tanks are cheaper without the tops, yeah)

I have a marineland top. It was like $20 although I hardly find myself closing it I usually end up leaving it hinged open.

I use screen lida for all my tanks. They're cheap (especially used) and work well with a fan to keep temps down.

I think I've been pretty lucky as all the tank I've acquired have had hoods. One's a fantastic duo glass sliding lid with a wooden hood over the top. There's a gap at the back between the two to allow wires and such to be run and allows evaporation to escape. The other is plastic with a built in light fitting. It's flimsy but does the job. Bar my salamander tank which I made a screen lid for.

I used to have used hoods and lights, but I always seem to need to go arm deep into my big tanks to get out uneaten food and such, so I switched to screen lids. Cheaper and easier, since you just take the whole thing off. I also have some glass lids for smaller tanks, but I just have screens for tanks 20 gallons or larger now.

I went with the DIY option and made my own using timber that I had lying around and purchased fly screen from a hardware store which is relatively cheap ;)

My tank came with a hood and 2 lamps bult in but I don't use it. I just leave my tank open and don't fill it up all the way.

I kinda like the look of open tanks personally.
